So What Does Nick Think of the Kmart Holiday Commercial with the Jingle Bells Guys?
So many people forwarded me that ad for Joe Boxer this holiday season and have asked my opinion that I thought I would write it down for once and for all.
I loved it. I loved it for a lot of reasons. It was funny, engaging, and had just the right cheekiness that didn’t cross the line. It was ironic, well-made and didn’t hint of any bad behavior. The product looked great, the guys were handsome and the point was made. What more could you want from an ad? It’s good to see Joe Boxer still flourishing in its perpetual teenage years, even though it’s almost 30 years old.
But I have one complaint. The bells weren’t big enough. I mean they should have been huge bells, like Vatican-size bells. Bells so big that you can hang on them and ring like a kid in a Spanish village. Bells so loud that you can hear them ring from London to New York, and that wake up most of the 15 people in Newfoundland. Bells so big they could be Atlas’s earmuffs, and that make the Philadelphia Freedom Bell look cheesy. Bells so long that at one end it’s Monday and the other end it’s Friday. So big that one’s Democrat and one’s Republican.
Anyway, that’s my only complaint. The next time they cast that commercial, they should go to Rome and listen at 10 am on a Sunday - that’s what I’m talking about. So bring on the gong.
